Deep in the mountains of Pattan Valley, the landscape is believed by devotees to hold a remarkable manifestation of Lord Shiva. According to local belief, 84 Shivlings emerged naturally from the earth, rather than being carved or installed by human hands. They are revered as manifestations of Shiva and are associated with his divine presence in the valley.
Local folklore tells that Lord Shiva passed through these mountains on his sacred journey towards Manimahesh Kailash. The landscape became sanctified by his presence, and the naturally formed stones came to be regarded as signs of his blessings.
What makes the place even more extraordinary is its sacred Belpatra grove. Belpatra is traditionally associated with the worship of Shiva, yet these trees are unusual in such a high-altitude Himalayan environment. For devotees, their presence adds another layer to the belief that this is a place touched by Shiva.
There is also a beautiful tradition of silence at the sacred site. Visitors are expected to keep their voices low and maintain a peaceful atmosphere—reflecting the belief that Shiva resides here in deep meditation.
"And perhaps that is the most beautiful part of the legend: In a valley where the mountains seem to speak through stone, the 84 Shivlings are believed to be the quiet footprints of Shiva himself."
